Yard waste is heavy, bulky, and can be difficult to get rid of. Fortunately, you have a few different options with Toronto yard waste.

The City of Toronto waste management and garbage collection services will pick up yard waste every other week on a property’s designated garbage collection day. This service is available between mid-March to mid-December. An exception is made in early January to pick up Christmas trees.

Assuming you choose to put your yard waste at the road, the City will collect it and then turn it into compost. This compose is then offered to the general public – for FREE – on Community Environment Days. Through the City-run program, it’s estimated more than 80,000 tonnes of yard waste is diverted from landfills annually.

Toronto has a specific definition of what they consider ‘yard waste’ to be. Going through Toronto’s waste collection service, they will only accept leaves, small tree limbs or stumps, plant materials such as weeds, mulch, pumpkins, and corn stalks. What is not accepted as yard waste includes grass clippings, sod, and soil. In fact, if you’re tossing weeds, you’re encouraged to remove any excess soil from them. The City is very strict about what it will accept and what it won’t.

Furthermore, in organizing your yard waste to get it ready for garbage pick-up, you’re expected to place it inside paper yard waste bags or open-topped containers. In storing yard waste for pick-up, cardboard boxes or plastics aren’t accepted. Any brush or branches need to be bundled, longer than 4 feet or wider than two feet. The diameter for any wood you need to set out for collection cannot exceed 3 inches. Any items that exceed these sizes, the City will not accept.

Needless to say, there’s a lot of specifications that your yard waste must follow if it’s going to be picked up by the City. If the yard waste you have exceeds the size limits or falls outside of what the City will accept, the next step is to call a private company. Thankfully, there’s Core Mini Bins.
